Glamorgan County Cricket Club has a rich and proud history but the global and UK cricket landscape is changing rapidly.
We are on a mission to ensure Glamorgan County Cricket Club continues to make Wales proud on and off the field and that we are recognised alongside the biggest counties in England and Wales.
Being one of the eight host venues in the Hundred competition has put us in a strong position to reap the best possible rewards from the recent Project Gemini investment process and it is critical that these proceeds are spent wisely. Becoming debt free and by building cash reserves it allows us the opportunity to invest in revenue generating activities to allow our club to become more resilient to external market forces and less reliant on ECB funding, making us financially sustainable for the long-term.
We have a unique contribution to make to the game as the only professional club in Wales. We need to use this and a strong working relationship with Welsh Fire to grow the game in Wales, driving more people to positively engage with the club across our whole country and our sport loving population of over 3 million people.
Welsh Fire will be key to this. The franchise has already shown how it can bring new people into the game with more than 50% of audiences having never been to Sophia Gardens before their first Hundred match. By developing winning teams and delivering world class experiences we can grow our brand, capture the imagination of these spectators, build a lifelong affinity for the game at all levels and see increased numbers visiting us.
We will place our people at the heart of our great club and aim to develop successful elite teams and players capable of representing their club and country with distinction, creating a ‘1 club, 2 teams’ culture. We want to create role models for the next generation to admire and aspire to follow and for our members to cheer.
The huge growth and success of women’s and girl’s cricket in Wales also presents an opportunity for success. A professional women’s team from 2027 will bridge the crucial gap between a booming women and girls’ recreational game and the Welsh Fire Women’s side. This gives girls the pathway to achieve their ambitions within the game. We must ensure that this produces a pipeline of talented cricketers that can go on and represent Glamorgan and Welsh Fire in the future.
Sophia Gardens is a world-class stadium renowned for delivering cricket’s biggest matches. It is a venue that is located in a unique and inspiring location, set in historic parkland and in the heart of Cardiff. We aim to maintain our outstanding reputation for hosting a diverse range of events and continue to open the gates of the Stadium to our communities.
This new cricket landscape presents opportunities for Glamorgan County Cricket Club that we have never had before and, with this strategy, we intend to grasp this and embed ourselves as one of the top 8 clubs in the UK.
